"Three frozen mummies that appear to be in an unprecedented state of preservation, as well as a cache of pristine artifacts, have been unearthed on an Andean volcano by an international team of archaeologists. The two girls and a boy, relics of an Inca sacrificial ritual, were found in a burial platform atop Argentinas Mount Llullaillaco, at 22,000 feet (6,706 meters) the worlds highest archaeological site..." -[National Geographic: Story, 4/99]-

A Discovery story: Mummy in the Peruvian Andes. "The dead decay quickly in the cloud-covered forest of the Peruvian Andes. But in November 1996, a few ranchers clearing trees stumbled upon a remarkable thing: a cache of extremely well-preserved mummies. They were from a long-forgotten tribe called the Chachapoyas and had probably survived close to 500 years."
