U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Women's Health Time Capsule Initiative Our WHTC is extraordinary----custom built to our specifications and especially designed and handcrafted with a controlled environment to protect and preserve virtually any material. It is guaranteed for 500 years against fire and flood damage should such a disaster occur here. It is constructed to withstand humid and/or salt laden atmospheres or urban atmospheres containing sulfur dioxide or corrosive pollutants. It also withstands the pressure of extremes to which it is subjected during the atmosphere exchange cycle. Our WHTC is fabricated from heli-arc welded 14-guage, 316 stainless steel designed as a single-wall configuration and hermetically sealed.

In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the NASA Lewis Research Center, a time capsule was dedicated on January 23, 1991. (On March 1, 1999, the Center was renamed the NASA Glenn Research Center.) The nine-foot metal sculpture stands in front of Glenn's Administration Building, surrounded by the U.S., NASA, and Ohio flags in a landscaped setting on three circular concrete walkways. The time capsule itself is contained within a highly-polished stainless steel sphere on a cast aluminum pedestal. A metal band sweeping out from the sphere symbolize human outreach into space.

Tips to Keep in Mind While Trying to Defeat Time - by Ivan Hanthorn, Preservation Department Head, Iowa State University Library for the Iowa Conservation and Preservation Consortium.

The 8-cubic-foot, stainless steel capsule was filled by Justin Carisio of DuPont Public Affairs and Dan Muir of Hagley. The contents were placed in DuPont Tyvek envelopes or wrapped in Tyvek sheets. After the lid's screws were tightened, a vacuum was drawn and nitrogen gas injected to provide a slight positive pressure, completing a patented deacidification process that will render the life of paper 20 to 40 times longer than untreated paper. The capsule is guaranteed for 500 years.

Bob Denver, also known as Gilligan from the popular 60's sitcom Gilligan's Island, joined forces with Progressive Watercraft Insurance to help launch "S.S. 20th Century" capsule.

The capsule's items were determined by a nationwide survey of 640 boaters. This survey found the top five historical maritime events to be the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Pearl Harbor, D-Day, JFK Jr.'s death and burial at sea and the maiden voyage of Titanic, respectively. Items commemorating these events will be vacuum-sealed within a glass sphere and then dropped to the bottom of the sea off of the Harbour Town Marina in Florida. The items have been donated from a wide range of associations including the Jacques Cousteau Society, America's Cup Challenge, and the U.S. Department of Interior. -[Copyright 1999 Medialink Worldwide, Inc., New York, NY, USA]-

Mark Shuttleworth has kicked off his countrywide roadshow with a visit to Bishops. Over a thousand grade 5 to 10 pupils from the South Peninsula will descend on the school campus to hear about Marks epic voyage into space. The extravaganza will be held on the Avenue field from 8am to 10am after which the Time Capsule created by the Bishops staff and boys, will be buried after a short ceremony.

The vacuum-sealed canister will be set in a concrete chamber, with a spot welded lid. It will be opened in 2040, to coincide with the next alignment of the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. This last occurred in April when Shuttleworth travelled on his landmark mission.

Even educated people blurt criticism, such as University of Kansas history professor Dr. Curtis Dandridge. He said "the capsule's dullness is a reflection of the time from which it came". Would this be the case had it been left alone, future generations will never know.

"A deep sense of disappointment gripped the citizens of Atchison, KS, Tuesday, when a 60-year-old time capsule unearthed from the site of a demolished library was found to contain a bunch of useless old crap."

"The capsulea large wooden crate bearing the words, "For The People Of The Future, So That They May Come To Know Us"is believed to have been buried in 1939 during the dedication of the just-built Atchison Public Library. Earlier this month, as the library was torn down to make room for a new Steak & Shake, demolitions workers came across the capsule, which had been sealed in the building's cornerstone."

"Though the capsule also bore the instructions, "Not to be unsealed until 2939 A.D.," civic leaders decided it should be opened as soon as possible." -[Copyright 2002, Onion, Inc.]-
