Kid Safe Search Services

The services below are designed primarily to serve the needs of children, either in focus, or by filtering out sites that some parents and teachers might find inappropriate for kids. These usually include sites that deal with explicit sexual matters, porn sites, violence, hate speech, gambling and drug use.

Filtered search engines allow you to search the entire web rather than just through a handpicked selection of kid-safe sites. Results are then filtered to remove possibly objectionable material.

AltaVista Family Filter is designed to protect children from seeing objectionable material when searching the entire web. Enable it by selecting "Family Filter is off/on" in the upper right corner of search box.

Ask Jeeves for Kids is a meta search service that searches it's database of selected sites arranged as questions, then conducts a parallel search of encyclopedias, Yahooligans and Education World. Answers are filtered for appropriateness.

Allows parents to screen possibly objectionable sites from Lycos search results. Formerly Lycos SafetyNet.

SearchGuard is designed to filter out inappropriate materials by dropping certain keywords from a user's search query. It aims to protect your children from seeing sites with offensive materials by removing them from our search results. In addition, Searchguard is designed to restrict access to certain areas and links on Lycos.com, including chat, email and message boards.

Billed as a kid-safe service powered by FAST Search, though some adult content does slip through. Also allows paid listings to appear at the top of its results.

Inktomi-powered search engine that attempts to filter out adult content, web sites promoting hate, and possibly offensive material. Also accepts paid listings at the top of its results. Directory listings are created automatically using Inktomi's classification technology.

The directories below are kid-safe. They use human beings to filter out sites that might be considered objectionable for viewing by children.

From AOL, it contains links to sites that are safe for kids.

Backed by librarians, KidsClick lists about 5,000 web sites in various categories. A very neatly designed site for teaching children 8 through 12 the basics of searching the web.

Yahoo for kids, designed for ages 7 to 12. Sites are hand-picked to be appropriate for children. Also, unlike normal Yahoo, searches will not be forwarded to Yahoo's search engine partner Inktomi if there is no match from within the Yahooligan listings. This prevents possibly objectionable sites from slipping onto the screen. Additionally, adult-oriented banner advertising will not appear within the service. Yahooligans is the oldest major directory for children, launched in March 1996.
