From the web's earliest days, it was structured as an international environment. All countries, even if they did not have internet access, were designated with a two-letter Top Level Domain (TLD): ".uk" for England, ".jp" for Japan, ".ca" for Canada. Not all the designations seemed to make sense. For example, Switzerland is ".ch". But it was an organized system designed for functionality. The United States was designated with ".us" but this suffix was never really utilized due to the surging interest in another, three-letter, suffix: the mighty "dot com". The US also led development of several other three-letter combinations. These included ".gov" for government, ".mil" for military (.navy.mil), ".edu" for educational institutions, ".net" for networks, ".org" for individuals or non-profit organizations and .info for informational sites.
